Biography

John J. Stein is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at Brown University. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Saint Anselm College in 1988 and his Ph.D. in Physiology (Neuroscience) from Brown University in 1995. Over the past eight years, he has actively participated in science outreach activities for the local community. Stein collaborates with members of the Brown community and local professionals on the NCRR/NIH Science Education Partnership Award titled 'Project ARISE: Advancing Rhode Island Science Education.' This project aims to develop innovative science instruction in local high school science classrooms and focuses on creating and sustaining partnerships that equip teachers with the content knowledge, tools, and skills necessary to prepare students to think critically as scientists. Through this initiative, high school biology teachers in Rhode Island are trained in inquiry-based pedagogical approaches to improve students' literacy skills in content areas. Stein's work also involves mobile laboratory equipment and hands-on experiences in classroom settings, culminating in year-long scientific inquiry presentations at an annual symposium held at Brown University.
