Biography

John Van Maanen is the Erwin H. Schell Professor of Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management and an Emeritus Professor of Organization Studies. With a background in political science and sociology, his academic career began at MIT Sloan in 1972. He has made significant contributions to the fields of organization behavior theory and cultural ethnography, focusing on diverse settings such as police organizations, educational institutions, and businesses across North America, Europe, and Asia. His works include observational studies of various vocational groups, including urban police beats and high-profile corporate and academic environments. He has also served as a faculty chair for the MIT Sloan Fellows Program and has been a visiting professor at several prestigious institutions including Yale University and INSEAD in France. Van Maanen's published works include 'Tales From the Field' and co-authored 'Career Anchors' with Edgar Schein, alongside numerous articles in prominent academic journals. He is an active member of both the American Sociological Association and the American Anthropological Association, and a fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology.
