Dr. John Ziegler

Biography

Professor John Ziegler is a Conjoint Professor at the School of Clinical Medicine at UNSW, Sydney. He joined the Sydney Children’s Hospital in 1976 and became a faculty member at UNSW in 1977. He has contributed significantly to the field of immunology, particularly in relation to HIV, having been a head of the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases and the HIV Service at Sydney Children’s Hospital since 2015. His academic journey includes receiving his medical degree from the University of Sydney in 1966, gaining membership in the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1969, and being awarded his fellowship in 1974. In 1995, he received his MD from UNSW and later completed a Graduate Diploma in Higher Education in 1998. Professor Ziegler is also a founding member of the Australasian Society for HIV Medicine and has served in various leadership roles including secretary and president. His current research interests encompass the genetics of congenital immune deficiency disorders, the epidemiology of food allergies in children, and public health issues surrounding HIV transmission. He is recognized for his contributions to the understanding of mother-to-infant transmission of HIV and has helped establish surveillance mechanisms for perinatal exposure to HIV in Australia.
