Biography

Jonas House is a postdoctoral researcher at the School of Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Southampton. His research investigates dietary change from a sociological and geographic perspective, particularly focusing on food practices that are established, maintained, and altered over time. Notably, he explores how shifts in food consumption occur, for example, how novel foods gain acceptance, how foods travel to new locations, and how public tastes change. His current research examines how certain items are classified as 'food' in culturally and practically significant ways, as well as how these classifications evolve over time and space. His main project, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, aims to develop a theoretical framework for understanding the various factors that influence which items ultimately become recognized as culturally significant food products. This includes an investigation into the diverse social practices of individual consumers and the actors involved in the production, supply, and consumption processes that shape food recognition.
