Biography

Joseph Stemberger is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Linguistics at the University of British Columbia. He earned his B.A. from Pennsylvania State University in 1977, followed by an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego in 1979 and 1982, respectively. His research interests primarily include phonology, morphology, language acquisition, and psycholinguistics. Stemberger's work is grounded in exploring adult speech errors and the cognitive representations underlying these phenomena. He has conducted significant research on language acquisition in typically developing children as well as children with phonological delays. His theoretical approaches include Optimality Theory and connectionist models, and he has worked on multilingual studies involving English, Slovene, and various indigenous languages in fieldwork contexts. Over the years he has held academic positions at Carnegie-Mellon University, Indiana University, and the University of Minnesota before joining the University of British Columbia.
