Biography

Joyce He joined the UCLA Anderson School of Management faculty as an Assistant Professor in 2021. Her research adopts a social perception lens to investigate the mechanisms that perpetuate gender inequality and to transform insights into behaviorally informed systemic interventions that alleviate such inequalities. Joyce's initial research experience in psychology focused on snap judgments, which inspired her to examine the real-world consequences of these judgments, particularly in the workplace. Her program of research fundamentally addresses key questions about the persistence of gender inequalities in labor markets and organizations and how to disrupt biases to change behavior. Joyce's recent work includes studies that explore how job seekers manage self-presentation regarding gender stereotypes in job applications. She has found that female job seekers who attempt to overcome anticipated gender discrimination by using feminine language in male-dominated job applications often face negative outcomes. Her ongoing research examines organizational promotion practices and aims to implement structural changes rooted in organizational design to enhance the representation of women in promotions. Joyce's scholarly work has garnered media attention from outlets like Scientific American and Psychology Today.
