Biography

Julia Christensen Hughes has been a faculty member at the University of Guelph since 1987 and served as the Dean of the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics from 2009 to 2019. Under her deanship, Julia facilitated the largest single gift in the university's history, a $21 million donation that provided financial support for faculty chairs, student scholarships, and innovative programming. She has been a staunch advocate for transformational learning and has implemented various pedagogical innovations including corporate social responsibility courses aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Julia is particularly proud of the growth in graduate programs during her tenure and of the recognition of Lang’s MBA in Sustainable Commerce as a top program globally. Her research interests include talent management, employee and student engagement, and creating positive organizational change, with publications in prominent journals. Julia has received multiple awards for educational leadership and contributions to research and academia, including the Gold Educator Award from the Ontario Hostelry Institute. Currently on administrative leave, she is focusing on numerous writing projects and speaking engagements regarding the future of education and organizational leadership in a post-COVID world.
