Justin Borevitz obtained his PhD in 2002 from the University of California at San Diego under Joanne Chory, focusing on the genetic basis of adaptive traits and environmental responses in model plants. He completed postdoctoral research at the Salk Institute with Joseph Ecker from 2002 to 2004, mapping plant functional genomic diversity. Borevitz held assistant and associate professor positions in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Chicago from 2004 until 2011. His research demonstrated the efficacy of Genome Wide Association Studies in plants and generation sequencing of emerging crop foundation species. In 2012, he joined ANU and became a Professor in 2014. Currently, he works within the Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology, utilizing Landscape Genomics to identify the gene variants that underlie adaptations to changing climates and soils for the restoration of global crops and woodlands.
