Karen Appleyard Carmody, PhD, serves as the Co-Director of the Duke National Center for Child Traumatic Stress (NCCTS) and is a licensed psychologist. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences as well as the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience. In this role, she directed evidence-based home visiting programs that served 1,000 families annually, supported by local, state, and federal funding, and managed federal SAMHSA grants to enhance Durham's early childhood system of care while supporting statewide early childhood mental health workforce development. Dr. Appleyard Carmody has extensive experience providing trauma treatment to children and families. Additionally, she has been involved in program evaluation and dissemination projects concerning evidence-based practices for young children who have experienced trauma and early adversity, including Attachment Biobehavioral Catch-up (ABC) and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). She has also engaged at both the state and national levels, serving on various boards and councils related to infant and early childhood mental health.
