Biography

Kariuki Kirigia is an Assistant Professor in the School of the Environment and African Studies Centre at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on the intersection of climate change, biodiversity conservation, and land governance, with an emphasis on African indigenous epistemologies and pedagogies. Kirigia has conducted substantive research on biodiversity and food security in multiple African contexts, including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Ethiopia, as well as on agricultural practices in the Netherlands and Ghana. Prior to his position at the University of Toronto, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, where he explored the alienation of African indigenous communities in conservation efforts. His publication record includes journal articles and book chapters, notably titled 'African Potentials' Wildlife Conservation Natural Resource Management: Image 'Deficiency' Tyranny. Kirigia is also engaged in collaborative research projects focusing on climate change and land governance, aiming to foster sustainable partnerships with indigenous organizations in Africa and North America.
