Biography

Karla Boluk is an Associate Professor and the Associate Chair of Graduate Studies at the University of Waterloo, specializing in Recreation Leisure Studies. Her research interests focus on the intersection of tourism and social justice, critically examines how tourism can enhance the well-being and quality of life for affected communities. She has pioneered work in sustainable tourism, positing tourism as a mechanism for positive social change, and has actively critiqued the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in the context of tourism sustainability. Boluk is currently investigating the role of social entrepreneurs in advancing sustainability via a SSHRC Grant. Karla has received several teaching awards, including the Inspirational Lecturer Award from the Ulster Student Union and was recognized for her innovative teaching on integrated tourism curriculums.
