Newfoundland-born Kate Bevan-Baker is a recognized fiddler and classical violinist. She started playing the violin at age four and thrives in a variety of musical styles including Celtic, jazz, and classical. She holds violin performance degrees from Memorial and McGill Universities, a Graduate Certificate in University Teaching, and a PhD specializing in Irish Music from Concordia University. Kate is a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Doctoral Scholar. She is a winner of Concordia University's Doctoral Thesis Defense Award in 2018 and received the inaugural Rhona Richman Kenneally Award for the top PhD paper at the Canadian Association for Irish Studies conference in 2018. Her music performance career has taken her to Russia, Canada with the National Youth Orchestra, and to China for the 2010 World Expo representing Canada. She also performed at the 2010 JUNO Awards with Michael Bublé. Kate is a founding member of the ECMA-nominated band Dardanelles and the all-female quartet Birds on a Wire, and she actively performs in various classical ensembles in Canada. Since moving to Montreal in 2010, she has balanced her active performance schedule with teaching at Concordia University.
