Biography

Kate Fitzgerald is a PhD Candidate and Research Officer at the School of Allied Health at the University of Western Australia. She completed her Bachelor of Science (Hons) majoring in Population Global Health in 2018. Kate's research is dedicated to promoting social justice and aims to improve physical and mental health outcomes for vulnerable populations, particularly through trauma-informed restorative practices in the education sector. Her current doctoral research explores the facilitators and barriers to the development of positive teacher-student relationships in Western Australian schools, viewed through a trauma-informed lens. Alongside her studies, she is part of the Thoughtful Schools research team, led by Professor Karen Martin, focusing on the physiological, psychological, and behavioral impacts of trauma. This team developed the Thoughtful Schools Program, an early intervention program that provides schools with a toolkit based on current best evidence to assist in becoming trauma-informed. The program is currently being implemented and evaluated in schools across Western Australia.
