Biography

Kathryn Starkey is the Edward Clark Crossett Professor of Humanistic Studies and a Professor by courtesy in the Departments of English, History, and Comparative Literature at Stanford University. Her research focuses primarily on medieval German literature from the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries, exploring topics such as visuality, materiality, object/thing studies, manuscript illustration, and the poetics of performance. She has held visiting appointments at the Universities of Palermo and Freiburg im Breisgau and is a recipient of several prestigious fellowships. Starkey has published extensively, with notable recent works including 'Things and Thingness in European Literature and Visual Art, 800-1600' and 'Animals, Text, Textile: Storytelling in the Medieval World.' As the principal investigator of the Global Medieval Sourcebook and an advocate for digital humanities, she has secured grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and is involved in various research projects that include a textbook on the history of medieval Germany. Starkey joined Stanford’s faculty in 2012 after teaching at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a Director of the Program in Medieval and Early Modern Studies and served in multiple administrative roles.
