Dr. Katie Misener

Biography

Katie Misener is an Associate Professor specializing in Recreation Leisure Studies at the University of Waterloo. Her primary research focuses on the capacity and social impact of nonprofit community sport organizations, particularly regarding the delivery of sport services that foster social engagement and responsibility. Misener examines the concepts of social capital, volunteerism, and inter-organizational relationships, with an emphasis on how sport organizations contribute to community health promotion and create collaborative value partnerships. Her significant work includes knowledge translation in social responsibility within community sport, and she has worked on multi-phase projects funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council alongside esteemed colleagues from other prominent universities. Misener is accepting graduate students whose research interests align with community sport organizations and nonprofit management. In addition to research, her teaching interests encompass sport recreation management and organizational theory. Misener has been involved in various courses such as REC 356, REC 413, and REC 641, aiming to instill active learning in her students.
