Kelly joined the University of Manchester in 2017 after holding post-doctoral research positions at Syndrome Education International, University College London, and Australian Catholic University. She is currently a Senior Lecturer in Psychology Education at the Manchester Institute of Education. Her research focuses on reading and language development disorders and she actively engages in developing and evaluating educational interventions. Kelly has led experimental studies and large-scale longitudinal studies of children's development, emphasizing randomized controlled trials of educational interventions. She is the lead author of two evidence-based educational programs: the Reading Language Intervention for children with syndromes and the Parents and Children Together program, which enhances early language teaching. Additionally, she is the co-convener of the Cognition Language Education: Application Research special interest group as part of the Education Psychology research group at the Manchester Institute of Education.
