Biography

Kevin M. Murphy is the George J. Stigler Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is a chosen MacArthur Fellow and has made significant contributions in the field of economics, particularly in the areas of wage inequality, unemployment, addiction, medical research, and economic growth. His work challenges preconceived notions and addresses complex economic questions through robust empirical and theoretical frameworks. In addition to his role at the University of Chicago, he serves as a faculty research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Murphy's primary research focuses on the empirical analysis of inequality, unemployment, and relative wages, as well as the economics of growth and the development of economic value in health and longevity improvements. He received the prestigious John Bates Clark Medal in 1997 and has been recognized as a fellow of the Econometric Society and an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Murphy earned his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1986 and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1981, joining the Chicago Booth faculty in 1984.
