Biography

Lara Saguisag is an Associate Professor with the Georgiou Chair in Children's Literature and Literacy at NYU Steinhardt. She has a rich academic background with a PhD in Childhood Studies from Rutgers University-Camden, an MFA in Creative Writing from the New School, an MA in Children’s Literature from Hollins University, and a BA in English from the University of the Philippines-Diliman. Her research is informed by climate justice and energy justice movements, particularly through the lens of children's cultural forms that interrogate human relationships with fossil fuels. Saguisag co-founded Climate Lit, an open-access web resource for teaching climate change and justice through children’s literature. She is committed to the development of global Filipino Studies and has a particular interest in Filipino/American children's literature, exploring issues of labor, race, and the historical context of the Philippines' colonial relationship with the United States. Lara has made significant contributions to comic studies, and her recent monograph, 'Incorrigibles Innocents: Constructing Childhood Citizenship in Progressive Era Comics,' examines childhood and nationality as expressed in Progressive Era newspaper comics. She has received multiple awards for her work, including the Charles Hatfield Book Prize and an Eisner nomination. She currently serves as the President of the Children’s Literature Association and is an Associate Editor for Inks: Journal of Comics Studies.
