Laura Curtis holds a PhD in Music Education from Western University. Her doctoral research, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, focused on the experiences of involuntarily childless women in community development and self-empowerment through a singing initiative called the Childless Voice Choir in the UK. In addition to her PhD, she has a Master’s degree in Music Education from Western University, an Honours Bachelor of Music from McMaster University, and a Diploma in Music Performance (voice) from Cambrian College. Among her research interests are the social and affective impact of collective singing on individuals and groups who experience marginalization and oppression, the relationship between infertility and the female singing voice, and lifelong musical learning in both community and institutional contexts. Lauren has been a self-employed private instructor of voice, piano, and music theory since 2004. She also lectures in Music Education at Western University and has taught at Brock University. Her involvement extends to serving as the Music Director for the Addison Women’s Choir in Cambridge, Ontario, and engaging with various community music initiatives, including participation as a member of committees within Choral Canada.
