Biography

Laura McGarrity is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Washington, where she has been a faculty member since 2004. She earned her Ph.D. in Linguistics from Indiana University, Bloomington, in 2003, following a Bachelor's degree in Russian from Trinity University in 1994 and a Master's degree from Indiana University. Her research interests primarily focus on Phonology, particularly Optimality Theory, prosodic stress systems, and children's phonological acquisition, including both typically developing and disordered speech patterns. Laura teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses, including introductory linguistics and phonology. She has developed a course that explores the linguistic, sociocultural, psychological, and neurological aspects of swearing and taboo language. Laura has received several accolades for her teaching, including the Distinguished Teaching Award at the University of Washington in 2025. She continues to engage in research and pedagogy that fosters an understanding of the complexities of language.
