Dr. Leila Ranta

Biography

Leila Ranta is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta, focusing on Educational Psychology, especially in language development and grammar instruction. Her research primarily delves into the intricacies of language grammar, interlanguage analysis, and the effectiveness of form-focused instruction in second language acquisition. Ranta has investigated the interplay between second language teaching practices and the theoretical underpinnings of second language acquisition (SLA). Her findings have contributed to understanding how teachers' beliefs influence grammar teaching methods. Beyond her research, Ranta has been an active participant in professional circles, serving on the executive committee of the Association for Language Awareness (ALA) and co-editing the Language Awareness journal. She also oversees the Academic Advisor role for the Visiting Students Certificate Program at the University of Alberta International, contributing to the academic success of international graduate students. Ranta is also noted for her engagement in SSHRC-funded research examining international graduate students' experiences with the English language, emphasizing the practical implications of her findings in both academic and teaching arenas.
