Biography

Lena Gumaelius currently serves as the Director of the KTH Global Development Hub, a central development unit at KTH (Royal Institute of Technology) dedicated to advancing the university's role in driving sustainable societal transformation through challenge-driven education in a global context. She works in an international academic environment focusing on global challenges, which she finds to be a great privilege. As an Associate Professor in Engineering Education at the Department of Learning in STEM, her research centers on making engineering and technology education relevant, attractive, and accessible to students. She is particularly passionate about exploring engineering programs designed to equip graduates to contribute to and lead the societal transitions necessary for a sustainable future. At GDH, she pursues questions in both Swedish and international contexts, collaborating with African partner universities to develop new educational models that cultivate key competencies for sustainable development and innovation. Gumaelius is also a member of the Marie Curie project SellSTEM, which examines spatial ability to support STEM learning.
