Biography

Lina Del Castillo received a B.A. in History and Latin American Studies from Cornell University and both an M.A. and Ph.D. in History from the University of Miami, where her dissertation won the University of Miami's Barrett Prize in 2008. Her research focuses on the intersections of 19th-century republicanism, scientific thinking, public sphere, and visual culture. Del Castillo's book, 'Crafting Republics: Scientific, Geographic, and Historiographic Inventions in Colombia,' examines how 19th-century Spanish Americans created new histories and sciences to understand their past in innovative ways, particularly through the lens of Colombian republicanism. Her second book project, 'Colombia’s Paper Empire: Cosmopolitanism, Print Culture, and Geopolitics in the Age of Revolutions,' investigates the transnational networks that shaped colonial and republican identities. Del Castillo's work has been supported by fellowships from the Institute of Latin American Studies at University of London, the University of Notre Dame's Institute of International Studies, the Jeannette D. Black Fellowship at the John Carter Brown Library, and the Fulbright Scholarship Program. She teaches courses on Modern Latin America and Mapping Latin America at the University of Texas at Austin.
