Biography

Lionel Mathieu, a native of Strasbourg, France, pursued his postsecondary education in the United States, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Cloud State University in English, French, and the Teaching of English Language. He completed both his Master’s and Ph.D. at the University of Arizona, specializing in Linguistics with a concentration in phonology, language acquisition, and teaching. His research interests include phonetics and phonology, with a particular focus on the orthography interface; language acquisition and teaching, emphasizing pedagogy and multiliteracies; psycholinguistics, concentrating on bilingual visual word recognition; and contact linguistics, especially regarding loanword phonology. Additionally, he has a specific interest in French linguistics, particularly in the area of phonology and historical linguistics. Lionel is also a certified examiner for the Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française (DELF A1-B2) and the Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française (DALF C1-C2).
