Biography

Lori Vos has enjoyed teaching writing at Queen's University for 20 years. She has been involved with the Queen's Writing Centre and Student Academic Success Services, where she has served as a writing consultant and program coordinator, assisting students at various levels with a range of writing projects and delivering workshops in undergraduate and graduate classes across multiple disciplines. Vos has a strong focus on the fundamentals of effective writing, including essay-writing, and has instructed an in-person experiential learning course titled 'Writing Community', which is set to be offered again in fall 2024. Her teaching approach aims to support students in becoming proficient, aware, and empowered writers. Vos believes that good writing stems from good thinking, and her courses promote the development of critical thinking and research skills alongside writing skills. Students learn to analyze both their own writing and others' writing rhetorically, while identifying and applying genre conventions. She emphasizes a process-oriented approach that allows students to practice planning, drafting, revising, and editing their work with feedback from peers. A priority in her WRIT courses is to provide detailed, individualized feedback on larger concerns such as thesis development, cohesiveness, organization, grammar, and style, to ultimately improve students' writing.
