Biography

Lotte Bailyn is the T Wilson (1953) Professor of Management, Emerita, at MIT Sloan School of Management. Her research investigates the intersection of institutional organizational processes and people’s lives, with a special emphasis on the dynamics of gender and diversity in business organizations and academia. Bailyn argues that industries will fail in an intensely competitive world unless they take into account the changing nature of the professional workforce, particularly the influx of women and the consequent lifestyle changes for both women and men. Her work shows that work and personal life can be synergistic rather than adversarial, challenging current assumptions about work practices that embed goals of business productivity without addressing employees’ family and community concerns. Bailyn has received numerous accolades for her transformative scholarship, including election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the recognition of her groundbreaking work on work-family reconciliation. She holds a BA in Mathematics from Swarthmore College and an MA and PhD in Social Psychology from Harvard/Radcliffe. Her honors include the 2021 Centennial Medal from Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and an honorary doctorate from Hebrew University of Jerusalem, acknowledging her contributions to equal integration of women in the labor force and her innovative research in the field of work-family dynamics.
