Biography

Louis Nagel combines an active concert and teaching schedule with lecture-recitals designed to engage both musicians and non-musicians alike. He has performed highly acclaimed solo recitals and concerto concerts in major American and European cities. He has taught at various prestigious music camps including the Interlochen Arts Camp, International Music Camp in Poland, Adamant Music School, and the Amalfi Coast Music Festival in Italy. Nagel previously served as the director of the School of Music, Theatre & Dance Outreach Program and was an advisor for the Bachelor of Musical Arts Degree program, as well as interim chair of the Department of Piano. He joined the faculty of SMTD in 1969. A sought-after presenter at state and national conferences, he has given lecture-recitals at conventions of the National Music Teachers’ Association in cities such as Dallas, Washington, D.C., and Salt Lake City. Nagel is a member of the board of the American Liszt Society and performs at the annual Great Romantics Festival at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He has collaborated with his wife, Dr. Julie Jaffee Nagel, a psychologist and psychoanalyst. As a Steinway artist, he has performed at Steinway Hall in New York and numerous Steinway music stores in Michigan. Nagel has recorded works such as 'Four Centuries of J. S. Bach' with Equilibrium Music and has degrees from the Juilliard School, where he studied with renowned musicians like Rosina Lhevinne, Josef Raieff, and Joseph Bloch, later receiving summer coaching from Vladimir Ashkenazy. His performances include Mussorgsky’s 'Pictures at an Exhibition' in Florence, Italy, and several programs devoted to Schubert's piano sonatas at Kerrytown. He has presented a program on Bach's French Suites at the Music Teachers National Association National Convention in New York.
