Biography

Lung-Hua Gail Hu is a Senior Lecturer Emerita in East Asian Studies at Brown University. She obtained her MA in TESOL from Teachers College, Columbia University. Joining Brown in 1999, she previously taught at institutions including CLASS (Chinese Language Area Studies School), Princeton University, and Middlebury Chinese Summer School. Hu's research interests focus on Mandarin Chinese phonetics, grammar, and pedagogy, particularly examining methods to assist students in reducing American accents when speaking Mandarin. She has been a board member for NECLTA (New England Chinese Language Teachers Association) and served as its president from 2016 to 2018. Throughout her career, Hu has received numerous awards, including the John Rowe Workman Award for Excellence in Teaching Humanities at Brown University. She has authored and co-authored several educational materials, including the 'Mandarin Grammar' and 'Chinese Skill Builders Level Textbook.' Her teaching encompasses a range of Chinese language courses and she is actively involved in research to improve pronunciation techniques and teaching methodologies for American college students.
