Biography

Luuk A.M. van der Wielen is the Executive Director of BRIGHT at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Biotechnology Research Institute, focusing on Sustainable Bioeconomic Development, starting from September 1, 2025. He specializes in innovative biosolutions for sustainable materials and microbial foods, promoting the green transition in Denmark. Previously, he served as the Bernal Professor of Biosystems Engineering Design at the University of Limerick (2017-2024) and a Distinguished Professor in the Biobased Economy at Delft University of Technology, where he led the Bioprocess Engineering Section. His research interests encompass biorenewables and production systems. He has an extensive publication record with over 350 papers and patents and has supervised a significant number of graduates. He has also played a pivotal role in various international research initiatives, including the Bioenergy and Biochemicals Innovation plan and BioPort Holland. He is involved in numerous advisory boards and has contributed significantly to shaping policy for sustainable aviation and industrial biotechnology. Luuk holds MSc and PhD degrees in Chemical Engineering from Twente University and Delft University of Technology, respectively, and is passionately involved in promoting sustainable practices in engineering and academia.
