Biography

Lynette Bowring is an Associate Professor Adjunct in Music History at Yale School of Music, where she has been since 2019. Her scholarly work focuses on musicology and the instrumental repertoire from the Renaissance to the Baroque periods. Bowring's current research centers around musical literacy education in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; she is working on a monograph provisionally titled 'Writing Instruments: Musical Literacy Learning Early Modern Italy.' Her contributions to the field include the book 'Music and Jewish Culture in Early Modern Italy: New Perspectives' published by Indiana University Press in 2022 and an edition of seven motets by Marianna Martines set to be released by A-R Editions in 2024. Bowring has published articles in significant scholarly journals such as Early Music Journal and Musicological Research. She frequently presents her work at conferences and offers pre-concert talks in venues across New York City and Connecticut. Bowring holds a Ph.D. in musicology from Rutgers University and has degrees from the University of Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music. In addition to her teaching, she serves as the Coordinator for Academic Studies and is a member of the DMA Committee at Yale School of Music, as well as acting as a liaison for the Yale Women Faculty Forum.
