Dr. Maeve Hooper

Biography

Maeve Hooper is an Assistant Senior Instructional Professor and Director of the German Language Program at the University of Chicago, where she has been teaching since 2019. She received her Ph.D. in Germanic Studies from the University of Chicago in 2018, having previously earned her B.A. from Reed College in 2009. Her scholarly work predominantly focuses on German Romanticism, Poetic Realism, and narratology. She investigates literary and visual representations during the Weimar Republic, along with literature from the 19th to 20th centuries. Her dissertation, entitled 'Tradition, Transmission, Translation: Narrative Frames in Nineteenth-Century German Novellas,' examined narrative framing techniques utilized by various authors, such as Ludwig Tieck and Clemens Brentano. As a dedicated instructor, she emphasizes a communicative and task-based approach to language learning, fiercely advocating for the development of both language proficiency and intercultural competence among her students. Maeve has also made significant contributions to the pedagogical community, having received grants for course development and organizing workshops focused on inclusive learning strategies. In her role, she closely mentors graduate students and advises undergraduates interested in studying abroad or acquiring language grants.
