Biography

Malek Batal is a Professor of Public Nutrition at the Faculty of Medicine, Université de Montréal. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Nutrition Health Inequalities and serves as the Director of the WHO-Collaborating Centre for Nutrition Changes Development. His research focuses on the links between the environment, food systems, and health, particularly in efforts to address health inequities. Batal collaborates with transdisciplinary teams across Canada and internationally, engaging with Indigenous communities and governmental bodies to influence public policy through research. His work includes projects on food security among Indigenous populations in Canada, as well as international research in Ecuador and Haiti tackling nutrition and health concerns. Batal is recognized as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. He has led and participated in numerous research projects aimed at understanding and improving nutrition and health outcomes, specifically among vulnerable populations.
