Biography

Maresi Nerad is an Emeritus Professor and founding director of the Center for Innovation and Research in Graduate Education (CIRGE) at the University of Washington. With a doctorate in higher education from the University of California, Berkeley, she has directed research at the Graduate Division for 15 years. Nerad joined the University of Washington in 2001 and opened CIRGE in 2002. Her previous roles include serving as Associate Dean of the UW Graduate School from 2003 to 2009 and spending time as a distinguished Mieguanyah Fellow at the University of Melbourne in 2005. She has held visiting professorships, including at Nagoya University in Japan. Nerad has contributed to national reviews of doctoral education and has served on various international advisory boards. Her research has focused on interdisciplinary doctoral programs and the impact of globalization on PhD quality, resulting in numerous articles and books, including her latest publication in 2014.
