Dr. Margaret Kovach

Biography

Margaret Kovach is an Indigenous scholar of Nêhiyaw Saulteaux ancestry, having a strong academic presence in Indigenous education and methodologies. Appointed Professor in the Department of Educational Studies at the University of British Columbia in 2020, she is recognized for her work as Professor Emerita in Educational Foundations at the University of Saskatchewan. Kovach is the author of the influential book "Indigenous Methodologies: Characteristics, Conversations, Contexts", and a co-editor of the book "Royally Wronged: Royal Society Canada’s Role in the Marginalization of Indigenous Knowledge". She is an esteemed member of the Royal Society of Canada, reflecting her status and contributions within academia. Her research is focused on exploring how Canadian universities can create supportive environments for Indigenous scholars and graduate students, advocating for social justice in higher education. Kovach's international engagements include numerous keynote lectures and visiting scholar positions, where she shares her expertise on Indigenous methodologies and education.
