Biography

Margriet van der Waal is an Associate Professor and Director of Studies for the Erasmus Mundus Master Euroculture at the University of Groningen. She holds an endowed chair in South African literature, culture, and history at the University of Amsterdam. Her research primarily focuses on Postcolonial European cultural identity, contemporary South African culture, and the Afrikaans literary field. She is also involved in transnational cultural production and interdisciplinary project-based education. In addition to her academic positions, she has served as an invited professor for the King Willem-Alexander Chair in Dutch Studies at the University of Liège, Belgium. Furthermore, she is an extraordinary professor at the Department of Afrikaans/Nederlands at the University of Western Cape, South Africa. Throughout her career, she has held various leadership roles, including serving as a board member for Noordwoord and ZAM, and has coordinated Euroculture Groningen since 2014.
