Biography

María Cioè-Peña is an Associate Professor at Penn GSE specializing in bilingual/biliterate education. Her research focuses on the intersection of disability, language, school–parent partnerships, and education policy. Using a sociolinguistic approach, she reimagines inclusive spaces for marginalized children through her work as a bilingual special education teacher. Cioè-Peña's scholarship has garnered multiple awards, including the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the National Association of Bilingual Education and the Early Career Award from the American Educational Research Association's Bilingual Education Research SIG. Her expertise includes critical race studies, sociolinguistics, and the educational experiences of bilingual students with disabilities. Cioè-Peña's recent projects address the educational challenges faced by bilingual Latinx children with disabilities, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as program shifts in bilingual education within New York City schools. Her academic contributions include numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes relevant to bilingual education and disability studies. Cioè-Peña is also an advocate for equitable education policies and practices that support multilingual learners and their families.
