Biography

Marian Jongmans studied Human Movement Sciences at VU University Amsterdam before completing her doctoral research at the Institute of Education, University College London, focusing on the relationship between brain damage during the neonatal period and motor, cognitive, and social-emotional development in preterm-born children. After earning her PhD, she was a research fellow at the University of Bristol, involved in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, examining young children at an increased risk of developmental disabilities. Returning to the Netherlands, she worked as a lecturer in child and adolescent psychology at Tilburg University, concentrating on the development of preterm-born infants and their motor difficulties in daily life. In 2001, she became a professor in Special Education at Utrecht University and has been involved with the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital (UMC Utrecht) in various capacities, including a health care psychologist. Between 2013 and 2017, she served as head of the Department of Education & Pedagogy at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences and has held the role of vice dean and director of the Graduate School at the Faculty since 2018. Her expertise lies in parenting and the development of young children, particularly regarding the risks of developmental disabilities and chronic illnesses.
