Biography

Mario Gandelsonas joined the faculty in 1991 as an architect theorist specializing in urbanism and semiotics. He served as the director of the Center for Architecture, Urbanism, and Infrastructure from 2007 to 2013 and was the principal researcher for the project 'Twenty Century Infrastructure,' which was funded by Princeton University's Global Collaborative Research Networks initiative. His work encompasses residential, institutional, and urban design projects for which he has received numerous design awards. Notably, in 2003 his firm won an international competition for Urban Design in the Xu Jia Hui district of Shanghai, completed in 2004. In 2005, he developed the Master Plan for the South Amboy Greenbelt, and in 2010 his firm completed the construction of the Pappajohn Sculpture Park in downtown Des Moines, Iowa, which showcases art accessible to the entire community. Gandelsonas has organized workshops on mobility and infrastructure in various cities including Princeton and Shanghai. He is a published author and a frequent contributor to architectural journals with notable works such as 'Shanghai Reflections: Architecture, Urbanism, Search for Alternative Modernity' and 'X-Urbanism, Architecture American City.'
