Biography

Critically acclaimed award-winning mezzo-soprano Marion Newman is a member of the Kwagiulth and Stó:lō Nations and has English, Irish, and Scottish heritage. Born in Bella Coola and raised in Sooke, BC, she is one of Canada’s most accomplished singers, with a diverse repertoire that includes operatic roles ranging from Charpentier and Cusson to Carmen and Rosina. She received a Dora Award nomination for her leading role in the world premiere of 'Shanawdithit' at Toronto’s Tapestry Opera. Marion has portrayed significant characters like Dr. Wilson in the premiere of 'Missing' and gives voice to the stories of Canada’s missing and murdered Indigenous women. In the 2022/23 season, she reprised a role with Anchorage Opera and participated in various projects, including a new work by Jennifer Butler with the Vancouver Island Symphony. Marion has also performed with notable ensembles such as the Vancouver Symphony and has been a significant figure in discussions about the meaning of “Canadian music.” Her commitment to authenticity and storytelling enriches her operatic performances, establishing her as a driving force in the context of classical music.
