Biography

Mark Crawford graduated from the University of the West Indies and completed a residency in anesthesia at the University of Toronto, followed by a pediatric anesthesia fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). He joined the faculty at SickKids in 1991 and served as the Director of Research for the Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine from 1999 to 2013. In 2009, Dr. Crawford became the Anesthesiologist-in-Chief, a position he held until 2020. He was appointed the inaugural holder of the Curtis Joseph Harold Groves Chair in Anesthesia and Pain Medicine in 2013 and was promoted to full Professor at the University of Toronto in 2017. That year, he founded the Canadian Pediatric Anesthesia Chiefs’ Forum, a national leadership forum for pediatric anesthesia, which he chaired for several years. As Anesthesiologist-in-Chief, Dr. Crawford advanced department initiatives including the creation of endowed chairs in anesthesia and pain medicine, the expansion of research productivity, and the development of advanced fellowship programs in pediatric pain and cardiac anesthesia. His research mainly focuses on the pharmacology of anesthetic agents, their effects during the perioperative period, and their impact on postoperative behavioral and cognitive outcomes in children. Dr. Crawford has served on the editorial boards of various specialty journals and has published 90 peer-reviewed publications.
