Biography

Mark Hailwood is an Associate Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Bristol. He has a background in social history, with research focusing on England during the period of c.1500-1750. His studies explore the intricate relationship between historical change and the everyday lives of ordinary men and women. His primary research interests include the history of drinking, work, particularly examining gender divisions in labor and work-based identities, time-telling, time-use, and literacy in early modern contexts. Hailwood worked on a significant Leverhulme Trust funded project that investigated women's and men's work activities using incidental evidence. His recent collaborative work includes producing a co-authored book on work experiences in early modern England, set to be published in 2025. He is also involved in various academic communities, having played an instrumental role in establishing an early modern history blog and the Drinking Studies Network. In addition to his research, he regularly gives public lectures and serves as the Associate Editor of the journal Social History of Alcohol and Drugs.
