Biography

Born in Sarasota, Florida in 1968, Mark Hetzler began playing the trombone at the age of twelve. He received his Bachelor of Music from Boston University and a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory of Music. As a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center, he completed a three-year fellowship with the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. Mark was a member of the Empire Brass Quintet from 1996 to 2012 and has performed as a soloist with various symphony orchestras across multiple countries including Australia, Taiwan, South Korea, China, Venezuela, Brazil, Japan, Hong Kong, Germany, Italy, Austria, Malaysia, Singapore, Switzerland, Bermuda, and throughout the United States. He has appeared on live television and radio broadcasts in Asia and the U.S., and his recordings with the Empire Brass are released on the Telarc label. Mark has released twelve solo recordings on the Summit Records label featuring a wide variety of genres. An active composer and orchestrator, he blends classical styles with non-classical influences, having composed a trombone concerto, 'Views of Infinity,' and numerous works for solo, chamber, and large ensemble settings. In 2004, he joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he teaches trombone, coaches chamber music, and co-directs the Low Brass Ensemble. He is also a member of the Wisconsin Brass Quintet, the faculty ensemble-in-residence.
