Biography

Marko Hekkert is a full professor at Utrecht University, specifically within the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development. His research focuses on the dynamics of emerging technological fields and their transformative impact on societies through sustainable pathways. He empirically investigates the transformation processes related to circular economy, agricultural transition, and energy transition. Additionally, his theoretical contributions aim to enhance understanding of emerging innovation systems by identifying micro-mechanisms—such as power dynamics, lobbying, research strategies, expectations, and resource allocation—that shape the dynamics of these systems. Marko has dedicated part of his research to the development of the Technological Innovation System framework, which is a key tool for comprehending socio-technical transitions. Alongside his colleagues, he is working on a new framework for assessing Mission Oriented Innovation Dynamics, known as the Mission Oriented Innovation System. This framework is part of the initiatives undertaken by the Utrecht University Mission Oriented Innovation Policy Observatory. Furthermore, Marko serves as the Director General of the PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency and is a member of the supervisory board of TNO.
