Dr. Markus Giger

Biography

Markus Giger is an Associated Senior Research Scientist at the Centre Development Environment (CDE) of the University of Bern. His research focuses on global change impacts, sustainable land management, desertification, climate change adaptation and mitigation, agricultural economics, and food security. He has significant field experience in various countries, including Indonesia, Madagascar, Kenya, and others, where he has engaged in projects related to sustainable rural development and agricultural extension. Giger is associated with several professional networks and organizations, including the Swiss Society for Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology, and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. He is actively involved in research projects aimed at understanding and improving the sustainability of agro-food-energy systems. He is multilingual, speaking German, English, French, Bahasa Indonesia, and Spanish, and he continues to contribute to the fields of agricultural research and policy across multiple regions.
