Dr. Marta Agüero Guerra

Biography

Marta Agüero Guerra holds a PhD in Hispanic Applied Linguistics from the University of Salamanca and a PhD in Hispanic Literary and Cultural Studies from the University of Iowa. Her research interests include humor studies, multimodality, pragmatics, and second/foreign language pedagogy. Her work explores multimodal narratives that comment on contemporary political and social realities in the Spanish-speaking world. She has published articles in national and international journals and presented her research at conferences in the United States and Europe. Marta is the author of 'Representaciones de la infancia en el comic: de la nostalgia al compromiso social' published by the University of León Press in 2023. Before joining Northwestern University, she taught Spanish as a foreign language in various institutions in Spain and the United States. Marta has teaching experience that includes language courses at all levels of the curriculum and has created and taught graduate seminars on humor, intercultural competence, pragmatics, graphic novels, and childhood nostalgia. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she serves as an academic advisor for Spanish majors and minors, participates in multiple committees, and is involved in the development of service-learning programs and Open Educational Resources (OER).
