Biography

Martin Williams is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Guelph. He received his PhD from Imperial College, University of London in 1993. Following his graduation, he began his career as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Guyana, where he later served as Head of the Department. Williams has extensive experience in research and teaching, including a Commonwealth Post-doctoral Fellowship to work on quantum dot luminescent concentrators for solar cell applications at Imperial College. He also held a position as a Research Fellow in the Solid-State Engineering Group at the University of Nottingham before joining the University of Guelph in 2005. His research primarily focuses on Physics Education, specifically modern pedagogy and the effectiveness of classroom techniques like interactive peer response systems. He is particularly interested in creating engaging learning environments for undergraduate physics courses, aimed at improving retention among women, minorities, and first-generation university students. Additionally, he works on developing effective training programs for Teaching Assistants to enhance learning outcomes.
