Dr. Matthew Abernathy

Biography

Known for his refined musicianship and impassioned performances, Matthew Abernathy is making a mark as one of America’s promising young conductors. He serves as the Associate Director of Choirs at the University of Michigan, leading the internationally acclaimed Michigan Men’s Glee Club and teaching within the School of Music, Theatre & Dance. In 2024, he was named Grand Prize winner of the MidAmerica International Choral Conducting Competition, leading to his debut at Carnegie Hall in June 2026. Abernathy also gained recognition as a distinguished semifinalist in the 2022 Fosco Corti International Competition for Choral Conductors in Turin, Italy, selected from 60 international applicants. Prior to his position at the University of Michigan, he served as Artistic Director of the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay. His work there included conducting a 140-voice symphonic chorus performing major choral-orchestral works and overseeing a community engagement program. Abernathy is devoted to music education and has held director positions at various universities, emphasizing aural skills in conductor training. He has also contributed to the Minnesota Opera's youth opera program and has performed with prominent orchestras and festivals. His studies under eminent mentors and his engagement in professional development workshops further enrich his conducting practice.
