Matthew Diemer examines how young people reflect on and negotiate racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic constraints within school, college, work, and civic/political institutions. He is particularly interested in how marginalized individuals develop critical consciousness and carefully analyze societal inequalities, as well as their motivation to produce social change and participate in political action. His recent work focuses on validating the critical consciousness scale and exploring how family wealth contributes to intergenerational educational and occupational success. Diemer serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Youth and Adolescence and is a member of the Professional Development Committee of the National Academy of Education. His research is currently funded by institutions such as the Spencer Foundation, William T. Grant Foundation, Institute of Education Sciences, National Institute of Health, and National Science Foundation. He earned his PhD from Boston College.
