Biography

Matthew R. Hayes is the Albert J. Stunkard Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the neural signaling pathways that control food intake and body weight regulation, with an aim to treat obesity and its associated comorbidities. The Hayes lab investigates the roles of neuropeptides, particularly glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), in energy balance and weight regulation. The lab conducts in-depth studies on how GLP-1 interacts with the vagus nerve and the central nervous system (CNS) to influence feeding behaviors. Some ongoing projects include examining the neuroendocrine systems that connect gastrointestinal satiation signals to the mesolimbic reward system, which plays a critical role in motivating feeding behavior. The lab is also exploring the physiological and cellular mechanisms associated with nausea induced by GLP-1 receptor agonists used in obesity treatment, as well as the side effects in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Through this research, Dr. Hayes is striving to improve therapeutic strategies for obesity and enhance the quality of life for patients suffering from nausea due to medical treatments.
