Biography

Matthew McGarrell is a Senior Lecturer Emeritus in Music at Brown University, specializing in conducting, music theory, and jazz history. He serves as the director of bands and teaches courses like jazz transcription and analysis. Raised in New Hampshire, McGarrell graduated from Loyola University College of Music in New Orleans, where he studied trombone. His professional career began in 1984 at Brown, performing with various professional orchestras and jazz bands, including the New Orleans Philharmonic and the New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra. He has also taught at the University of New Hampshire and Northeastern University. McGarrell has adjudicated and guest-conducted for high school and college wind groups across the United States and in several countries including Canada, Great Britain, and France. His professional affiliations include the New England College Band Association and the College Band Directors National Association. After a sabbatical in Portugal where he played trombone with Banda Filarmónica de Covões, he is currently focused on preparing editions of Portuguese band music for performance in American bands. His research interests encompass the preparation and collection of music for Portuguese bands in the United States and Portugal.
